Background of the Study
Maternal mortality remains a significant public health issue worldwide, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where complications during pregnancy and childbirth contribute to high mortality rates. In Nigeria, the maternal mortality rate remains alarmingly high, despite the availability of skilled birth attendants and advancements in healthcare. One of the most effective ways to reduce maternal mortality is through improved antenatal care (ANC), which involves regular monitoring of a pregnant woman's health, early identification of complications, and provision of education on maternal health.
Nurses play a central role in antenatal care, providing routine screenings, education, and emotional support to pregnant women. They are also responsible for identifying risk factors, such as hypertension, gestational diabetes, or infections, and ensuring timely interventions to prevent complications that could lead to maternal death. At the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), the role of nurses in ANC is vital in reducing the risk of maternal mortality. However, despite the importance of ANC, there may be challenges in the provision of effective care, including inadequate training, insufficient resources, and poor patient compliance.
This study will evaluate the role of nurses at UATH in reducing maternal mortality through enhanced antenatal care practices, exploring the factors influencing the quality of care provided.
Statement of the Problem
Maternal mortality rates in Nigeria remain high, despite the presence of skilled healthcare providers. Nurses, as key members of the healthcare team, play a significant role in reducing maternal mortality through effective antenatal care. However, there is limited research on the specific contributions of nurses to this aspect of maternal health care, particularly at UATH. Understanding how nurses influence maternal outcomes through ANC can help identify areas for improvement and optimize their role in reducing maternal mortality.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses at UATH in providing antenatal care and reducing maternal mortality.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of antenatal care interventions provided by nurses at UATH in preventing maternal complications.
3. To identify challenges nurses face in the provision of antenatal care at UATH.
Research Questions
1. What is the role of nurses at UATH in reducing maternal mortality through antenatal care?
2. How effective are the antenatal care interventions provided by nurses at UATH in preventing maternal complications?
3. What challenges do nurses face in delivering effective antenatal care at UATH?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at UATH play a significant role in reducing maternal mortality through antenatal care interventions.
2. The antenatal care interventions provided by nurses at UATH are effective in preventing maternal complications.
3. Barriers such as insufficient training, resource limitations, and poor patient compliance hinder the delivery of effective antenatal care by nurses at UATH.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of nurses in reducing maternal mortality through antenatal care at UATH. Limitations may include the reliance on self-reported data and the influence of external factors such as the availability of medical supplies and patient attendance at scheduled antenatal visits.
Definitions of Terms
• Maternal Mortality: The death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of delivery due to complications related to pregnancy or childbirth.
• Antenatal Care (ANC): A type of healthcare provided to pregnant women before birth, aimed at monitoring health, detecting complications early, and educating women about healthy pregnancy practices.
• Nurses' Role in Maternal Health: The responsibilities and contributions of nurses in the management and care of pregnant women, particularly through the provision of antenatal care.
